Birmingham Ultimate win Mixed Nationals!

On 23rd/24th August Birmingham Ultimate travelled down to Southampton to compete in the UKU Nationals event. Entered into the mixed division after a strong first season of Mixed Tour; climbing from an inital 33rd seed to eventually finish 17th at Mixed Tour 3 (Mixed Tour results can be found here).

The combination of a relitvely small division and some of the more established teams not entering after their exploits at worlds, left a possiblity of qulaification for Euros, but after a shaky start – squeaking out a win against JR and then getting thumped by Brighton Breezy – this seemed unlikely.

However, following a comfortable win over ABH (and a favourable result in the other game in our pool!) a semi-final berth was secured, meaning one more win and the club would be going to EUCF in only it’s second competitive season…

The semi-final game against Thundering Herd was probably our best game of the weekend, we took an early lead and never surrendered it en route to a 15-8 victory and qualification for Euros in Frankfurt!

With a somewhat unexpected Euros spot in the bag – there was then the small matter of the final. A scrappy game with a lot of turnovers seemed to be getting away from us a couple of times, although we managed to grind out some long points and hang with Pingu Jam. At 13-11 down it looked as though the game was almost lost, but during the last few points we capitalised on tournovers, going on a 4 point run to win 15-13 – and with it take the title of National Champions 2014!
